LIAT is Leeward Island's national carrier. Leeward Island is in the Caribbean. It serves the islands of the Eastern Caribbean, from Santo Domingo to Georgetown. LIAT started operations in 1956 as Leeward Islands Air Transport with one single aircraft. Since then the company has experienced periods of growth and recession. In 1974 LIAT was nationalized and in 1995 was privatized again. Now its fleet consists of more than 10 planes and serves passengers and cargo flights.
