Alitalia (Linee Aeree Italiane) is the Italian legacy airline and was established in 1947 as Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali. From the beginning the company rapidly expanded and in 1960 was the official carrier of the Olympic Games in Rome. In the 1990s began a period of financial difficulties that brought Alitalia close to bankruptcy; now it seems that the airline is progressively growing out of trouble. Alitalia is a member of the SkyTeam alliance. It is based in Rome and its main hubs are Milan Malpensa and Rome Leonardo da Vinci international airports. The company operates worldwide, focusing on medium haul routes in Europe.
