Air Berlin is a German low-cost airline with its main base in Berlin (Tegel) Airport, but it operates from many other German departure points, including the "fringe airports". It offers connections among the major European cities, but its main service is oriented toward the most popular holiday destinations on the Mediterranean coast, in the Canary Islands and in North Africa. After the Second World War, only aircraft from the Allied powers were allowed to land in Berlin. "Air Berlin Inc." was founded in 1978 in Oregon, USA, by former captain Kim Lundgren from Portland. The company was acquired by German investors after German reunification. The first Air Berlin flight started with a leased Boeing 707 from Berlin/Tegel to Mallorca. It is still today the most important destination in Air Berlin's network routes. Air Berlin started as a leisure airline and has now evolved into a low-cost carrier.
